How to rebook a free-cancellation hotel when the price drops
By the DropStay team · November 2026
A hotel you booked with free cancellation can get cheaper before check-in. When it does, you can book the same stay again and cancel the original to keep the difference.
Do it in the wrong order, though, and the room can sell out in between, or it can look like you paid twice. These steps help you avoid both.
1. Make sure it really is the same stay
Switching on price alone can leave you worse off. On the new booking screen, check each of these against your original booking.
- Room type and bed setup
- Breakfast included or not
- Free cancellation, and its deadline
- Number of guests (children with their ages) and rooms
- Check-in and check-out dates
- Total price including taxes and service charges
2. Compare totals that include taxes
The nightly rate in search results may leave out taxes and service charges, or already include a coupon. Compare the final total on the last screen before payment with the total in your original confirmation email.
For pay-at-hotel bookings, also look at what you will pay at the property and in which currency.
3. Confirm the new booking first
If you cancel first, the room can sell out or the price can go back up in the meantime. Cancel the original only after the new confirmation email arrives.
The two bookings overlap for a short while, but as long as the original is within its free-cancellation deadline there is usually no cancellation fee — check the terms in your confirmation.
4. Cancel the original before the deadline
Free-cancellation deadlines are often stated in the hotel’s local time. Abroad, that can fall on a different date than at home, so check the exact date and time in your confirmation email and leave yourself a margin.
After cancelling, make sure the cancellation confirmation email arrives.
5. Check refund timing and your card limit
When you cancel a prepaid booking, the refund can take several days to come back through your card issuer. Until then it may look as if both amounts were charged, so make sure your card limit has room.
Pay-at-hotel bookings usually just hold your card details, so there is less to wait for — though some hotels place a pre-authorisation.
6. When it is better not to switch
- The difference is small and your original booking carries member perks or points
- The cheaper rate is non-refundable — you could not switch again if the price falls further
- The original’s free-cancellation deadline is so close that there is no time to wait for the new confirmation
- You already made special requests to the hotel (late check-in, extra bed) — you would need to make them again
Where DropStay helps
DropStay watches your free-cancellation booking until the deadline and tells you when the same stay looks bookable for less. Even with an alert, whether to switch is your call, using the steps above.
