Why hotel prices keep changing after you book

By the DropStay team · November 2026

Seeing yesterday’s room cheaper today is nothing unusual. A hotel price is not set once; it is recalculated again and again based on rooms left, the date and when you book.

Prices follow the rooms that are left

Many hotels adjust rates per night based on how many rooms are left and how fast bookings come in. Slower than expected, the price goes down; faster, it goes up.

So the same room on the same night can cost different amounts depending on when you book.

Cancelled rooms come back on sale

When a free-cancellation booking is cancelled, that room goes back on sale. Closer to check-in, hotels sometimes lower the price to fill those rooms again.

One room, several prices

Limited-time deals, app-only prices, member tiers and coupons can all apply to the same room. That is why the price you see depends on whether you are logged in and whether you use the app or the website.

For a fair comparison, look under the same conditions (logged in or not, same device).

Exchange rates move too

Hotels abroad often set prices in local currency and show them converted. When the exchange rate moves, the converted price moves with it. Compare prices in the same currency.

That is why free cancellation pays off

With a free-cancellation rate, you can rebook the same stay when the price drops and cancel the original. If the price goes up, you simply keep what you have.

The steps are in “How to rebook a free-cancellation hotel when the price drops”.

If you cannot keep watching

Searching for the same hotel every day until check-in is tedious. DropStay watches the price until the free-cancellation deadline and tells you when the same stay looks cheaper.
